CARBA5 RAPID DETECTION TEST
KPC, OXA-48-like, VIM, IMP, NDM Carbapenemases Detection & Characterisation
MULTIPLEX IMMUNOCHROMATOGRAPHIC ASSAY FOR RAPID DETECTION OF THE FIVE MAIN CARBAPENEMASES IN ENTEROBACTERIACEAE
Our test is an immunoassay (immunochromatographic lateral flow technique) using monoclonal antibodies targeting enzymes.
CARBA 5 characterizes and identifies if it is OXA, NDM, KPC, IMP, VIM; it is complementary to Chromogenic Biochemical Assays that detect carbapenemases such CARBA NP or CHROMagar mSuperCARBA which does not tell you if it is OXA, NDM, KPC, IMP, VIM.
Furthermore, Carba 5 is an ideal product for 3 main applications:
1/Screening: after a positive bacterial culture on selective chromogenic media (such as CARBA Smart (for example). Our test is faster (usually 5, max 15 minutes) and cheaper than PCR and faster than antibiotic susceptibility testing (which often requires complementary testing).
2/Bacteremia: Recent work have shown that CPE carriers may get blood stream infection in 10% of the cases. Therefore, a positive blood culture with a Gram-negative-bacteria can be rapidly screened with NG-Test CARBA5, thus allowing adaptation for efficient treatment. This is specially true with the zavicefta being available for the treatment of KPC and OXA-48-producers infections (but not for MBLs)
3/Susceptibility characterization: As per Eucast, every Enterobactericeae with reduced susceptibility to any carbapenem, requires complementary testing to identify possible carbapenemase. Thus NG-Test CARBA5 should be used in front of any CRE to confirm the resistance mechanism for infection control and implementation of proper treatment
In comparison to other PCR methods (besides Cepheid which is more costly compared to other PCR methods): PCR usually needs a previous extraction of 2h and a real time PCR of 2h; in average 4h; there is a lot of hands on time for the clinicians, there is a risk of error and risk of contamination (risk of aerosol). PCRs do not detect all strains. Amplex does not detect IMP. Studies have shown that the CARBA5 has comparable results against PCR methods.
